KOULOUMA 🧺 🪁 🦐

Koulouma (Κούλουμα) is the traditional celebration of Clean Monday—the first day of Great Lent in Greece.

Clean Monday marks the beginning of a 40-day period of reflection and fasting leading up to Orthodox Easter. It’s about purification, simplicity, and renewal.

People share foods that follow Lent rules:
• Lagana (flatbread baked only for this day)
• Taramosalata (fish roe spread)
• Olives, beans, greens
• Seafood like octopus or calamari (no meat or dairy)

Families head outdoors—parks, hills, beaches—to fly kites 🪁 symbolizing the soul rising and letting go of excess. It’s joyful, communal, and very Greek.

October 28 2025: 85 years from the day Greeks said NO (OHI) and famously rejected Mussolini’s forces to cross the Greek borders during WWII.

This decision made on 28th October 1940, is commemorated each year as a day that represents bravery, solidarity and heroism for millions of Greeks all around the world.

Winston Churchill commented at the time of the Greco-Italian war and famously said:

“Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks.”

📍SYROS

Ermoupoli is the capital of SYROS island and entire South Aegean region.

With its imposing Town Hall, designed by the famous architect Ernst Ziller in the late 19th century. Once the hub of commerce and politics, Ermoupoli remains the beating heart of Syros today.

In front, the statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis honors the hero of the Greek War of Independence, watching over the square as a symbol of freedom and resilience.

📍Gates of Hades / Acheron river

Acheron Springs (Pyles Adi):
In Epirus, you can visit the narrow gorge of the Acheron River, which is accessible to hikers and offers a unique and mystical experience connecting to ancient beliefs about the Underworld.

The Acheron River was believed to serve as a boundary to the Underworld, with its narrow canyon now known as the “Gates of Hades”. A temple to Hades and Persephone, the Necromanteion of Acheron, was also located nearby, serving as a site for communicating with the dead.
