The_Metalsmith

The_Metalsmith Contemporary jeweller and metalsmith. Currently working on themes of humanity and positivity. Working as ethically and sustainably as I can.

Two of the most important things to me in jewellery making are creating miniature pieces of art/sculpture, and doing everything as ethically and responsibly as possible.
-
The jewellery/metalwork/mining industries have quite a big effect on the state of the world so if we want to start seeing some changes, this is a really good place to start.
-
Join me at on the evening of Wednesday 24th June to contribute a little change to the world, one workshop at a time! We’ll have an introduction conversation about what this jewellery world looks like, and then make some simple silver rings as well!
-
It’s completely accessible for beginners but there’s still something to enjoy for those who have a bit of jewellery making knowledge too!

As a jeweller, particularly one who teaches, I very rarely seem to have enough tools! I’ve been working on a small series of workshops to travel with, so I can reach a slightly broader audience than the folks who find me in Wi******er! These workshops will have a higher capacity than the ones I’ve been running at the studio, which means more tools needed! (First ones at coming soon! Visit their website/stay tuned on socials to find out more!)
-
I’d been scouring Marketplace, eBay and the online Jewellery groups for the tools I needed but there wasn’t much popping up…. Then I found and .renew.store ! I messaged them asking if they had a few things I’d been after, they kept their eyes peeled and put a few things aside for me. When I went to go fetch them, I did end up leaving with quite a few more! We’ve got a lovely little garden at and needed a few extra things to help us take care of it!
-
Be sure to visit .renew.store in Netley Marsh when you get the chance! And take a look the website to find out more about the fantastic work they do! Help give old tools new life!

‘Surplus’ is my third collection: one I’ve dabbled in for a few years, but up until February 2024, had never really had the time to get stuck in and develop it.
-
‘Surplus’ started as a project that looked at our impact on the world - both materially/environmentally, and in terms of the effects our actions have on our others across the world. It’s evolving a little in the time I spend on it, but that essence is still there. One thing that has remained consistent throughout is the concept of only using materials I’ve already got, or something that’s had a previous life.
-
The collection is mainly made up of brooches, but for our upcoming exhibition, I’ve ventured a little beyond my comfort zone and created 5 new wall pieces to sit alongside them.
-
You can find a selection of the brooches on my website, stocked at in London or at gallery!
-
If you’d like to see the new pieces, be sure to visit our exhibition at from Thursday 4th June until Sunday 26th July.

The exhibition coming up in June is full of all new work! Myself and the other TCF artists have been very busy over the past 6 months, creating new pieces and sorting all the admin and organisation that goes into putting on a good exhibition!
-
I’ve chosen to focus on my ‘Surplus’ pieces for this exhibition and will be showing a series of new brooches, alongside 5 wall pieces, something a bit different for me!
-
Be sure to pop this in your diaries! We will be releasing a dates list soon for the public to find out which days we’re in, to allow them to plan their visits accordingly.

We’re taking over the ‘City Space’ at this summer for our exhibition, ‘The Colour Factory Artists: The Everyday’.
-
The exhibition opens with the library at 9:30am on Thursday 4th June and closes on Sunday 26th July at 5pm. I shall be bringing a new selection of pieces from my ‘Surplus’ collection - mostly brooches, but also some wall pieces, a little bit of uncharted territory for me!
-
I shall definitely be there for four days of the exhibition, taking my turn to steward (schedule to be released) but if you’d like to meet me there, or find out more about the specific works, please do get in touch!
-
Photos: a series of cryptic photos not revealing any finished pieces, hopefully just giving enough of a flavour to create a bit of intrigue! More to come over the next few weeks!

A little note to say that if you’ve got a little pile of old/broken/unworn jewellery, it can be melted down to make something new. Whilst these pieces were made from fresh gold (and are one of a kind!), I’ve got all the kit I need to make a version just for you with your own metal.
-
If you’re keen to learn more about these reworking process, be sure to send me a message and I’d be happy to explain more!

It’s not easy to toot your own horn, but I’m going to start to make a bit of noise from now on! In the endless list of things to do, I often forget to show these little pieces that make up a large part of what I do. They rarely get their time in the sun but I love all of these rings and very much consider them a Metalsmith staple. I also have one of each and wear them regularly! Here is a little selection of Google reviews and emails that I’ve received, alongside photos I’ve taken and photos that have been sent to me on receipt of the new treasures!

If you’ve purchased one of my pieces, commissioned something or taken part in a workshop and would like to leave a review, send me a message or leave a comment below and I’ll message you the link!

Reviews not only make a huge impact on small businesses by telling the world we’re good eggs, but they also work wonders for our spirit too. Hearing that someone adores this little thing you’ve put so much time, thought and effort into means so much, and can brighten a wintry day instantly!

If you’re interested in any of the pieces above, I’ve just updated sizes and featured some of them in my stories, so be sure to click through to find out more! Restock of the others coming soon!
