Set of Two RHS Wisley Pots

At Whichford, we have been growing vegetables, herbs and fruits in our pots since we started making them. When you visit the Pottery you will see pots of produce weaving their way around our courtyard garden and stockyard. Of all the vegetables to grow, lettuce is one of the most rewarding. Here are a few tips from our gardener Mark for growing lettuce in pots. As all Whichford pots are made with a drainage hole in the base to prevent water logging, Mark will begin by covering this with crocks - ideally a curved piece of terracotta.

Using a good quality peat-free compost, fill your pot to about three quarters full.

Mix a small handful of slow-release fertiliser into the compost. Use organic chicken manure pellets to give your plants a good start.

Once you are happy with the position of your plants, fill the pot with compost, leaving about 3cm from the top of the pot - this will make future watering easier.

Finally, water thoroughly until you can see water coming out from the bottom of the pot. Mark will now place this RHS Wisley Pot in our courtyard garden for the potters to enjoy a few leaves with their lunch!

Whichford Woodfired Flowerpots

In celebration of our fiftieth year, we are proud to present our first collection of Whichford Woodfired Flowerpots. Elegant, practical shapes are handthrown and decorated in our workshop before being fired in our large woodfired kiln for several days and nights.

During the firing, flame and ash move naturally through the kiln creating extraordinary landscapes of colour and texture on the surfaces of each piece.

Every pot is unique, frostproof and stamped with a small oak leaf to mark the first firing of the Whichford Woodfired Kiln.

Spring Gift Collection in Blush Pink in our courtyard garden.

Dylan centering 12lbs clay for a London House Primrose Pot.

Having thrown the pot, Dylan uses a ‘ribber’ to smooth the throwing rings on the wall of the pot.

He then applies a smooth band of slip followed by ...
.. the London House Primrose roulette.

The London House Primrose roulette. Inspired by the clumps of native primroses which grow in the hedgerows, lanes and woodlands around the pottery, Jim designed and hand-carved this joyful roulette for our London House Primrose Pots.

Celebrating 50 Years of Flowerpot Making

When Dominique and I founded the Pottery we simply wanted to make good, practical flowerpots for gardeners using the skills I learnt during my apprenticeship - it astounds and delights us that we are still doing this today, joined by our children, Adam and Theodora, alongside our skilled team.

Marking fifty years of flowerpot making is an achievement we are extremely proud of and it is only thanks to gardeners who hold dear our flowerpots, and the time-honoured methods of working which we use, that we are where we are today - so thank you for choosing to support British craftsmanship and our team here at Whichford.

With all best wishes,
Jim Keeling
