Angel Blue Fire Agate and Pearl necklace I made for my mum this week. I used a magnetic clasp as they’re really useful for people that haven’t the dexterity in their fingers for fiddly clasps. It’s made me want to get making again. So much stuff has been going on personally I’ve not had time or mojo to make much.

Back in the silver studio tonight. Have had so much going on I sort of wondered if I should have signed up for another term. But then I got making and was so glad I did! So excited for next week as we’re trying a new technique. Also the labradorite ring I started last term is taking shape…literally!

Made myself a necklace! I love to make jewellery for mini breaks and holidays. Accessories are a great way of changing the look of your outfits and jewellery is light and versatile to pack. Since I had my colours done and discovered I’m a summer I can make jewellery to compliment my season perfectly. I’ve made commission pieces for others looking for some travel jewellery so let me know if you’d like me to make you something!

Day 3 of March Meet the Maker is: snippet. I’m running late today as I’ve had one of those days and it went right out of my mind. 🤦🏽‍♀️ this is a snippet of what I’m working on at the moment. Experimenting with wire shapes and texturing. Not sure if I’ll end up using these or not. I feel I’ve lost my way about silversmithing wise. Normally I know exactly what I want to do but I’m floundering a bit. It’s like at the moment the vision is something I’m glimpsing out of the corner of my eye rather than seeing head on.

Day 2 of March Meet the Maker is: All about you.

Hi! I’m Jan and I am Isisjem designs. Part magpie I’ve always loved beads and sparkly things. So it’s not surprising that I’ve loved dabbling in jewellery making.

In 2020 I started learning silversmithing via zoom exploring precious metal clay. This led onto silversmithing when lockdown ended and I could get into the silver studio

This picture of me was actually taken in the silver studio last week when I was back there starting weekly evening classes. It feels very different working this way as I’ve been used to whole day workshops, so I’m having to adjust my approach and try and get my mojo back.

I’m heavily influenced by the natural world and love getting outdoors in the countryside with my camera.

I love learning new techniques and experimenting!

Day 1 of March Meet the Maker is about brand origin.

It’s really hard to talk about the brand and not talk about me as the two are inextricably linked. I started my Etsy shop isisjem designs in 2020. Even though I’d made and sold jewellery previously it was 30 years ago and only at craft fairs! And that’s still something I’d like to get back to and maybe do some pop-up sales.

I started isisjem designs during Covid having rediscovered my love of working with beads and making jewellery during lockdown. I’d made so much stuff it was suggested I start selling it! Isisjem had long been my online presence name - a combination of isis for the Oxford connection, as that’s where I’m from and my initials. Also, JEM seems appropriate when you’re making jewellery!

As you can see I still don’t have a logo or banner. I’ve looked into this but can’t decide what I want. I spoke to a designer friend who made suggestions based on info I gave them on my brand, it’s values and ethos. But everything they came up with was either too slick and not really appropriate to my brand image (it’s not high end fine jewellery it’s lovely stuff you can wear but not have a breakdown over if you lose it because it needs a bank loan to replace) or more appropriate designs looked too much like those in use by other brands. So I’m still on the hunt for the perfect design that sums the brand up!

Tomorrow being March 1 is I did pretty well with this last year. In fact I post on this account far better when I have prompts. So I’ll give it a go again and see if it gets me posting more regularly. I hope you stop by to see how I get on.

Don’t faint from shock because I’m posting! I had all these great ideas about posting regularly but then got distracted and disillusioned with selling. The latter made the former easier and motivation to make dried up. I needed to take a step back. Yesterday I was back in the silver studio with working on literally all the projects. I learn something new every time! Silversmithing is definitely a skill where the more you learn the more you want and need to learn. Bonus earrings made last of all. .

I’m so out of the groove with . Not sure why. I guess my mojo has taken a dip with life getting in the way and not really knowing what to do with my Etsy shop and selling in general. I spend spurts of time researching what to do and it helps in discounting things, but it also can be quite demoralising. Which has an impact on my mojo. But I still love silversmithing and beads!

Last time I was in the silver studio with I was working on two projects which didn’t get finished. Today (whilst also starting a new project) I finished them! First up is this turquoise set ring with beaded detailing around the setting. The cabochon was a right pain to set as the stone was so unlevel! 🤦🏽‍♀️ so pleased with how it turned out. Swipe to see!
