MILLHOLLOW STARLET 1/3/1997-11/6/2024
My tribute to you Starley: 💔
Spring of 1997, in a field in Downpatrick, Co Down I struggled to choose which foal I wanted to purchase. Having got to know Moira Mc Kenna and the Millhollow Stud mares I just knew that one day I had to bring one home.
“ Home Of Champions” was on the wall and by the look of the mares and foals I saw in front of me that saying couldn’t have been more accurate. Roma Blue Wind, Sheans Lady, Roma Silver Pearl and Pride Of Down but to name a few, I had my work cut out for me and after so much deliberation I picked two foals, Millhollow Starlet and Millhollow Lady. A few weeks later Moira phoned to tell me Starlet had injured her leg on sheep wire and that I didn’t have to take her as she knew I had planned to show them, but I was resolute I wanted the daughter of Roma Bliue Wind even if that meant I couldn’t show her. Thankfully the scar diminished as Starlet blossomed into the beautiful mare that caught the eye of the spectators and judges all over Ireland, as a young mare she was always in the rosettes and as she matured the sashes started coming as she won championships at The Royal Dublin Horse Show, The Irish Draught National Shows, Tullamore Show, Cadtlewellan Show to name a few..
Starlets 1st foal Carrickrock Classic won the All Ireland Yearling Filly Championship at Roscommon Show and her 2nd foal Carrickrock Midnight Dancer was also a show winner and is the dam of the popular Stallion Bannvalley Pride Of Midnight, Starlet continued to breed under our new prefix Ardglen..
Unfortunately as with many grey mares Starlet fell victim to Melanomas and so we decided to retire her at 20yrs (2017).
I would like to thank Moira McKenna and Millhollow Stud for giving me the opportunity to own such an amazing horse.
Starlet was part of the family, she had a unique character, loved to fidget, thrived on attention and cuddles she was extremely loved and will be missed by us and her comrade Millhollow Lady, we were truly blessed to have had her in our lives…
