Butter Lane Antiques

Butter Lane Antiques Specialists in English Antique Jewellery and Curiosities. Alex’s Story…
Alex was introduced to the business by his parents in 2003. The rest is history.

He began selling old lots of costume jewellery through online auction sites, and soon became familiar with the fast-paced nature of online retail and the importance of good customer service; he kept this job throughout high school, familiarising himself with smaller pieces of Antique Jewellery, charms and other curiosities, the world of online sales, and all that came with it. Fast forward 10 year

s… After graduating from Warwick University, where he majored in Philosophy and minored in Business Management, he went full force with what would later become Butter Lane Antiques. After meeting Monty, Alex’s right hand man, they began building the brand. With a long list of international clients, they ship out hundreds of pieces of Jewellery from their Manchester offices each month. Day-to-day, Alex is very active in all aspects of the business and is solely responsible for the buying. Alex’s next project is to curate and introduce a line of smaller classic pieces of jewellery alongside the Antiques. He is looking to launch this in late-Spring 2017, and is currently working tirelessly with his jeweller designing and managing the production. Alex currently lives with his 4 year old pug Sidney in Manchester, UK. Want to know anything else? Get in touch :D

Monty's Story...
Not many people know that Monty is also called Alex, but to save confusion all round he took a new name (of course, inspired by Monty Don from Gardeners’ World). Monty read Classical Music Composition at Edinburgh University, before moving to Manchester where he met Alex and fell into Antique Jewellery. Now responsible for making the jewels look pretty online, and general day-to-day running of the office, he can usually be found photographing antique diamonds – preferably listening to 2Pac. In his spare time Monty enjoys wildlife photography and free improvisation, regularly performing spaced-out future music to small audiences around the UK.

A cute and very handsome antique lucky pig charm. Carved from a single piece of natural coral, it features little pointed ears, a snout and eyes. It's so small, I can't even imagine carving it! With fittings for wear on a chain, it dates from the Georgian period and makes a lovely (and lucky) addition to your charm collection.

A gorgeous antique, German made solid silver cigarette case, dating from the turn of the century, circa 1900. It features fantastic enamel the eternity of the front, displaying the mythical figures of Leda and the Swan. This is how to story goes... In Greek Mythology, Leda was the wife to the King of Sparta, who was loved by the god, Zeus. Zeus transformed himself into a swan and seduced Leda, and as a consequence she gave birth to the twins Castor and Pollux, who were hatched from eggs.

This is shown perfectly in this enamel portrait, and it remains in fantastic condition throughout. The colours are fantastic- Leda is finished with long blonde hair and a rose tinted body, while Zeus' feathers are beautifully detailed throughout. They stand in front of a lake, displaying hues of dark blue and green combined with the sunset pink and orange sky and green trees. The piece is hinged at one side, opening and closing securely.

"Just A Thimbleful"
This cool Victorian novelty shot glass is modelled as an oversized thimble. Modelled in sterling silver throughout, it features the well known saying "Just A Thimbleful" applied across the top, along with the English hallmarks dating it to Birmingham and the year 1876. Its definitely not lost "a single drop" of humour over the years, remaining in lovely antique condition.

A fantastic miniature Georgian charm in the shape of a purse. It's crafted in 18k gold and opens to reveal a small locket compartment. Both the front and the back are finished in fine enamel work, with a portrait on one side and flowers on the other. When viewed through a loupe the details are so fine. Beautifully crafted in France and remaining in lovely antique condition.
Antique jewellery often includes floral motifs, as part of their "Language of Flowers", whereby each flower or plant represented some romantic or emotional sentiment... In this case, pansy for thoughts and roses (rosemary rose) for remembrance.

A striking pair of antique earrings, modelled as super cool coiled snakes. The bodies coil around themselves, leading to the emerald set "brains" (0.37ct each) that are finished with fine gold detailing- skin, eyes and mouth. They modelled in buttery 14 karat (heavy duty hollow) gold, making them a light and comfortable wear in the ear. They feature gold hinged wires, are French made and date to the late 19th century.
