Slipcasting Espresso cups.

I’m using porcelain slip to cast small espresso cups.

I leave the cups to cast for about 10 minutes, this is dependant on the type of clay & how the slip is set up, the thickness can be adjusted easily with water or sodium silicate, but testing the pint weight first helps with gauging & measuring the consistency.

The handles are cast separately & cast solid, the plugs are actually the reservoir of the mould, so I can fill the mould up fully without having a hollow in the handle.

The handles are stuck onto the cup with a small amount of slip & the excess can be tidied up with a brush or I use a knife just to make the join as net as possible.

This is one of the most satisfying processes involved in slipcasting.. trimming the soft clay to ensure the edge of the shape is flat.

The mould has a ledge or reservoir just inside so that it can be over filled with casting slip.
When the casting time is up, 30mins for this big bowl, the excess liquid clay or slip is emptied & the rim can be trimmed back using the ledge as a flat guide.
It ensures a level & consistent finish to the bowl shape. πŸ™Œ

Wait for it…. Should’ve had a bigger trough!

This was the first time we made one these large 50cm dishes, we’re pouring slip- liquid clay into a porous mould allowing it to settle for 20 minutes & pouring out the excess. Didn’t quite get the logistics right! πŸ€ͺ

New Mugs are here! πŸ’™πŸ€πŸ’™

I’ve been collaborating with who have produced this beautiful set of 4 mugs using my Mr & Mrs mug shape. They’re cast in translucent English bone china & proudly made in Stoke on Trent.
Each with a slightly different pattern placement, embellished with a gold rim & handle.

With only a couple of weeks until Christmas there’s not much time to pick up these before the factory close for the festive break. They’re available in a set of 4, each with a different pattern or singularly.

You can buy directly from the factory here:

I’m collaborating with on a couple of projects at the moment . Not only are they producing my mugs in bone china with one of their traditional patterns, which should be released next week… but, I’ve also been delving into their Creamware archives to explore a contemporary approach to traditional shapes.

I’m busy working to get a few ready in the next week as I think they’ll make fabulous Christmas gifts. πŸ’™πŸŽπŸ’—

If you’d like to see them available for Christmas let me know, I’d be interested to know what you think!
