Fraser Hamilton Jewellery Often clutching uncommon cuts of precious gems, the hand, a symbol of creation and discovery, is a recurring motif within the designs.

Born in the Highlands of Scotland, Fraser Hamilton studied silversmithing and jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art, Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, Tokyo and finally the RCA in London. Casting elements of the human form in precious metal, he uses the body as landscape, playing with our cognitive understanding of scale to create monolithic sculptures in miniature, that simultaneously channel anti

quity and popular culture. Carved from wax and then cast in gold and silver, Fraser's signature collections feature the sunken signet rings, Reclining Nude rings, Hand pendants and rings as well as his more recent mask pendants. The iteration of the hand has the twin narratives of heartfelt, sentimental gesture and allegorical discovery of the precious, with the gem within the sunken signet, seemingly in the process of being dug from the ground. With a medieval, almost pagan grittiness, Fraser's jewellery, layered with symbolism and meaning, form an intriguing collection of contemporary totems.

Bracelets and chains for him, for her, for whomever… My companion series of chains continues to explore the very literal act of adornment with detailed hands actively hooking on and securing a robust and heavy curb chain… These items make for excellent gifts and lengths can be customised.

This second chain is a thick and wired rope style.. I grew up by the see and there was always fishing paraphernalia kicking around on the beaches and harbours… The frayed heavy rope used for securing creels and lobster traps is a very tactile memory.

This third style is my ‘Knot’ chain each link is hand formed and cast in solid gold. It is the most sculptural and luxurious style of chain I’ve made so far. The centre pendant sees a faceted cut of natural Australian chrysoprase with a gorgeous smokey minty green held in a woven carrier setting.

Looking beyond the tactile debris of the beach and hand tied knots I am fascinated with creating perspective and a new sailboat motif. While I do not consider myself a sailer, I do like the image of a sailboat out on the horizon.

Somewhere in the middle sits this hand in a carved frame - this gesture for me is very neutral, it is possibly reaching, it’s generally just a sign of acknowledgement.

The landscape also sits in the middle and my tidal rings aim to freeze an ever shifting tidal ripple - the way they catch and shift the light keeps this pattern intriguing to me.

Rings for all occasions… not all need to be bridal, they can be whatever you like…possibly my favourite items to make are rings. They can have a central solitaire motif or they can tell a story all the way round.

My hand rings always aim to present the action of making a ring or of the discovery of a gemstone - excavated from the earth and presented to the wearer. They delicately demonstrate that first moment of resonance with a unique, natural mineral. Something so small yet containing magnitudes in its endless facets and glorious colour…

Once discovered the precious gemstones are bound and secured to be carried forth. Held in place by tension but the appearance is flowing and not forced the webbing between each stone weaves around the facets in order to show them off a little more…

For something more robust woven ribbons of gold can be fashioned in a bushcraft style as if they were crafted from the most basic elements available yet rendered in the most luxurious solid gold.

More sculptural geological and geographical forms are often inspired my the fine facets of the more unique sapphires that I find…

And each hand carved band has its own considered details and delicate wrapping to convey a sense of discovery and preservation…

The more literal interpretation of my statues inspiration can be seen in my long standing ‘reclining nude’ ring… an idea born of treating the body as a landscape and having statues sit atop it… to make the wearer consider the scale of precious elements.

Welcome to charming pendants and chains… Each is individually hand-formed and finished so they are all in a way one of a kind… I would also say that each one tells a story of some sort. They are all investigating something….
The sapphire masks have their own character and they are all reversible with alternating textures on each side.

My wrapped up charms delicately encase precious gemstones, securing them as precious cargo.

My classic hand motif enacts a moment of discovery, each hand presenting its bounty.

My new ribbon pendants see these hands delicately pull at and secure diamond festooned webbing.

Finally a combination of webbing in a new sapphire mask sits next to a heavy gold chain of knotted links.

A very unique and alternative style of engagement or statement ring, securing three magnificent natural sapphires…
This series of rings was developed from an older idea of transforming the monolithic or statuesque down to a miniature scale to treat the body as if it were a landscape that grand totems and statues would sit atop… The above bound ring imagines the discovery of a hoard of giant gemstones, in this case sapphires, it treats them as if they were huge and found in a jungle or wilderness… they are strapped to the ring with rudimentary binding and tension. Secured and ready to be carried forth… Im trying to convey a notion of discovery and for the wearer to consider how this item was made, how its works and what it is doing. On the Horizon, sapphire baguettes all tied tight around a central diamond, held together by ribbons of gold… This new ring is something Ive had in mind for a long time, it is possibly the first iteration of this tension like setting but it won’t be the last…. I like this idea of a quick sketched out ring, the off-centre hand binding works perfectly well, its charming and light but it’ll still last a lifetime, it carries the energy of something that is being figured out. The next iteration will be a more refined effort, more polished and possibly with more stones. You can find out more by following the links in my profile.

Catching stray strings of diamonds… Newness… some intricately detailed hands are bending, lifting up and presenting a ribbon of gold festooned with diamonds… look at em! I like the playful tension in this one and I will be making more similar pieces for the season ahead.. everything mostly remains one of a kind so do turn on notifications etc and keep an eye on my feed… for all the extra info I send out valuable but infrequent emails that often have a rare discount code… sign up to my mailing list to receive those! Bold and Back in stock… ‘Bràmair’ is one of a few classics in my ever evolving and ongoing collection of oddities misfits and ideas come to life… I never dictate the exact meaning behind my hand motif… I find that ‘hands’ hold so much symbolism across many cultures and history and jewellery is such an intrinsically personal thing being worn so close, on a small scale and often for many years that it is up to the wearer what symbolism they carry.

For me the hands have always been a very literal way of narrating the act of discovery. These hands are finding and presenting a diamond…
