PART TWO: Septembers jewellery showcase: The Giver 🌈

📚Each month we present independent jewellery designers connected by a shared theme. This year, our showcases take inspiration from book titles linked to distinguished jewellers.

Our September showcase, The Giver takes inspiration from accomplished jeweller Jane Moore and the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, who writes of a world awakened through colour.

“You’re beginning to see the colour red.”
“It was so — oh, I wish language were more precise! The red was so beautiful! … Do you see it all the time?”
“I see all the colours … When you receive the memories. You’ll gain wisdom, along with colours.”
Jonas wasn’t interested, just then, in wisdom. It was the colours that fascinated him.
“Close your eyes and be still, now. I’m going to give you a memory of a rainbow.”
— The Giver by Lois Lowry

Enter a world alive with vibrant hues and delicate shades for a showcase celebrating colour’s power to stir feeling and memory. From palettes of gems to soft enamel tones, colour plays a key role in shaping jewellery’s expressive power.

📆 Showcase open from 3 September - 25 September
⏰ Visit: Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm
📍 FORGE, 59 Leather Lane, London EC1N 7TJ

What really makes gemstones ethical 💎👇

Understanding what ethical means is really important for your customers, there is a lot of greenwashing out there! So small independent makers are in an extremely strong position to really inform the public what ethical means, and when you buy your gems from the UK Ethical Gem Fair your customers know 100% they are ethically sourced.

1️⃣ Provenance you can trust
“This gem’s journey is fully traceable, from mine to maker.”

2️⃣ Fair treatment of people
“The miners and cutters are paid fairly and work in safe conditions.”

3️⃣ Respect for the environment
“It’s sourced with minimal impact on the land.”

4️⃣ Authenticity with integrity
“It’s as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside.”

5️⃣ Supporting responsible trade
“Buying this helps sustain communities and businesses.”

And there is so much more you can say:
💎 “This sapphire comes from a small mine in Malawi, no two look the same.”

💎 “It was cut by skilled local lapidaries, adding more value to the community.”

💎 “I buy directly from the supplier, so I know their values and methods.”

💎 “Mining respects local traditions and supports the community’s future.”

These simple explanations make it easy for customers to understand why your work matters, and why buying from you makes a difference.

My recommendations of good bars, restaurants and cultural places to visit during Manchester Jewellery Week👇

Below is what I did on my three day break to Manchester City last week!

📆 Manchester Jewellery Week 10-16 September. See for more details.

💬 Comment MANCHESTER to express interest in meeting up at one of the Jewellery Week venues. Let’s see if we can get a little group together ✨

🏨 I stayed two nights at CitySuites2, mainly because it had a swimming pool, and you could book an apartment!

WEDNESDAY
🥪Pot Kettle Black - Really delicious lunch!

📚The John Rylands Library - Stunning, mind blowing, must see!
Rylands

🍱 Yuzu - Authentic Japanese for dinner. Great simple food and strong gin! Perfect for catch up with Sister-in-Law!

🏳️‍🌈Rounded off the day with a drink in Canal Street

THURSDAY
💍 Manchester Craft & Design Centre. Wonderful little boutiques selling handmade crafts by independent makers and Fred’s Cafe is superb too!

💣Aviva Studio- Ai Weiwei: Button Up! Incredible exhibition! Ends on 6th September so not much time left!
Factory International
Ai Weiwei

🎭 HOME: Manchester Open 2026 Exhibition: 420 selected works by artists across Manchester. Great restaurant and delicious bar food. I went to the theatre but there are also cinemas.

🍸End day with G&T at hotel bar.

FRIDAY
📚Manchester City Library - Fabulous building and free exhibitions in every space and corner.
The Manchester City Library

🖼️ Manchester Art gallery - stunning building, and a number of free exhibitions. I saw WORN: Life within Clothes, Won’t Sit Still, Out of the Crate: Investigating the Sculpture Collection

🍸Castlefield - Walked along the pretty canals and enjoyed lovely G&T in the garden at The Wharf pub.
