A piece of football and Ulster history on the bench today- a watch made by Steel & Sons, Belfast.
This watch was made in 1888 by the same company that sponsored the creation of the Steel & Sons Cup, a major fixture of the County Antrim & District FA since its inception in 1895.
Steel & Sons Ltd was a major jeweller, watchmaker, optician and wholesaler. When this watch was produced in 1888 Belfast had just been granted city status, and the company’s address on Royal Avenue must have been one of the most prestigious in all of this bustling metropolis. After 137 years it is still going strong like the city that birthed it!
