Historic Crafting

Historic Crafting We aim to keep historic crafts alive! As a couple based in England, we use ancient techniques to create modern replica items.

We weave, viking knit, nalbind and others to produce products such as bracelets, bookmarks, and many more handmade items!

Modern uses of rigid heddle weaving!

Woven with 100% cotton and I had to ask to take a quick photo of it after I sold it at the show, only took it off the loom last month and forgot to photograph it

To mordant or not mordant

As an experiment about 18 months ago I dyed yarn with turmeric

I had one unmordanted, one mordanted with alum, and one mordanted with alum, then modified with iron

After many show days outside in the sun and the rain, this is how the unmordanted skein has faded

Liking the effect but this experiment serves as a reminder to myself to always mordant to keep it vivid and not just whack it in the dye pot and pray to the dye gods😅

🧶Let's talk sprang!🧶

A lovely person in our group made this sprang loom so I'm giving it at a go 🎉

Its an ancient method of making fabric which looks similiar to netting.

Unlikely weaving, no weft thread is used and it makes the design on the top and bottom of the frame

Used to make hairnets, it's also rumoured to have made tights
