🕯️ Seaham Seaglass ~ Trash to Treasure 🕯️
Much of the "English Multi" sea glass found at Seaham is actually *industrial waste* dumped into the sea a century ago. Tumbled by the North Sea for decades, some are discarded uranium shards.

But don’t be fooled ~ not every glowing piece of sea glass is uranium. Most of them are lying to you. 🕯️Seaham in County Durham is one of the finest sea glass beaches on earth. For seventy years the Londonderry Bottle Works tipped its waste over the cliffs, and the North Sea ground it into jewels. A few of those pieces carry uranium, but most glowing finds are not uranium at all, they are manganese, and it glows just as green.

Here is the secret collectors use. Manganese answers to 365 nanometres but falls silent at 395. Uranium glows under both. Two torches tell the truth.So if you have called a glowing Seaham piece uranium, you may be holding an impostor. Or the rarest find of all, genuine uranium glass tumbled by the sea for a century.Which torch do you carry? And have you ever been fooled?~

🕯️Luminescent Milk Glass 🕯️
It looks like porcelain. It is not.

In 1877 Sowerby's glassworks in Gateshead invented Vitro-Porcelain, pressed glass made to pass for fine ceramic. Two years later they patented their ivory version, named for the royal creamware it imitated.

But the ivory was not innocent. Uranium was mixed into the opaque glass, hidden under the milky surface. To the eye, a cream dish. To a blacklight, something else.

The secret stayed hidden for over a century. Even today, Sowerby's ivory pieces still carry their radioactive signature, and they still glow.

The most careful disguise in glassmaking history. Uranium dressed as porcelain, sitting on a sideboard, glowing quietly for a hundred years, waiting to be found out.

💚 During our recent trip to Czech Republic, The Uranium Hunter and I visited an old uranium mine, now an underground museum, which has an abundance of uranium glass in the walls. I was absolutely captivated by it 💚
