Last weekend was a little different for me. No markets, no events… but definitely not a proper night’s sleep either!
On Friday evening, we found a baby squirrel lying on the road, dangerously close to passing traffic. We looked around carefully for his mother, checking the nearby trees and bushes, but unfortunately we couldn’t find her.
We decided to take him home, as we understood that after dusk his mother would be unlikely to come down from the tree to search for him. We believe he may have fallen from a tree, or perhaps become separated from his mother while she was moving him.
We made him as comfortable and warm as possible, placing him in a box with a warm water bottle and soft, warm clothes around him. We checked on him constantly throughout the night to make sure he was okay.
We estimated that he was around 4–5 weeks old. His eyes were still closed, and he was clearly very dependent on his mum.
The next day, we tried to rehydrate him with a little warm water, sugar and salt, as we had nothing else available. After doing some research, we learned that baby squirrels should not be given food or ordinary milk, as they need their mother’s milk or a specialist formula.
Trying to contact wildlife associations, vets and rescue centres was unfortunately unsuccessful. Many didn’t answer, and we also learned that in the UK grey squirrels are sadly considered pests or vermin, which can make finding help incredibly difficult!
After more searching and researching, we finally found an angel called Rebecca. She is a volunteer and an expert in caring for wild animals. She kindly offered to take him in, feed him and give him the care and shelter he needed until he was old enough to become independent and eventually be released back into the countryside together with other squirrels she is taking care. 🤍🐿️
I honestly can’t thank Rebecca enough for what she does. Knowing that this little one is now safe, warm and in experienced hands means everything.
