"Over the next 5 months every specialist under the sun worked with her. They gave her plasmaferesis which basically cleaned her blood. She had two lines directly into her heart. Things started to improve and over time she learnt to read and write again, walk, talk and spent years with therapists of all types. I can't remember all the different medications she was on. She had intravenous lines in her hand arms and feet at one point. As time progressed various problems came to light. Her bladder would never recover fully neither would her walking. She was left with ME(chronic fatigue) vasovagal, a fainting condition, memory loss, anxiety problems, complex PTSD and recently diagnosed BPD" (that's a story for another day!)

"I never thought I would see Celda leave home. I had advice from her consultant that this would never go away and over the years she would present all sorts of conditions both physically and mentally. She worked so hard at school, despite bullying, and very little support from teachers. She even chose to repeat a year in high school even though she had no friends in that year. For almost the whole time she worked in a room by herself because the bullying was so bad. All she wanted was to go to university."

Whilst learning how to talk again, I also had to learn how to walk but due to the muscle and nerve damage, I could only walk a tiny bit. And this took MONTHS to be able to even stand as I was paralysed for a long time. Due to the brain damage, my left side is weaker, which means I walk with a limp. After months of physio and every test under the sun, I was able to walk small distances, but Iโ€™ve been left with Crouch Gait (very common in cerebral palsy). Long story short, I was in hospital for 5-6 months and was able to have home visits which eventually lead to me being discharged.

Mum's take on the weight of the world for their children and mine did and some. Without her, I really don't know if I'd still be here today. She carries just as much of the trauma as I do and I hope that she knows how strong she really is ๐Ÿ’–

Today is World Encephalitis Day! ย  very kindly got in touch with me recently so I thought I would share my story again. This will be in several parts as it's very long! ๐Ÿฅฒ

In 2004 I was diagnosed with Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) at the age of 9. ADEM accounts for around 10% of all known cases of encephalitis.
ADEM is a brief but intense attack of inflammation (swelling) in the brain and spinal cord and occasionally the optic nerves that damages the brainโ€™s myelin (the white coating of nerve fibres). I was a very active kid who did dancing and loved sports. As I don't remember a lot of it, I've asked my mum to tell you all, in her own words, what happened.ย

"When she was 9 Celda came to me to say she had a sore back and couldn't go to the loo. We tried Calpol and fresh juice thinking she maybe had a bladder infection. If only it had been. By late afternoon she was in a coma. She has contracted Acute Disseminated Encephmiylitis . A rare form of virus that attacks the spinal nerve and brain. By the next day she was in a small ward on her own as a member of the nursing team had to be with her at all times. Her organs were closing down. I will never forget my parents being with me when the consultant told me she needs specialist help. They were taking her to the sick kids hospital in Edinburgh. My Mum, a nurse for over 45 years, just held me. She knew more than she was telling me and prepared me for the worst. I couldn't go in the ambulance due to a specialist nursing team having to be with her. I don't even remember the journey to the hospital."

"Initially Celda was in ICU. She had a balloon she kept pulling on and shouting Mum. She was given White blood cells to see if that would help. After 3 days in ICU she woke up! However she was paralysed from the neck down with only one arm moving. They were concerned that her liver and kidneys were failing. She was like a 4 year old speaking like a baby. The consultant warned me she may never walk again. I prepared for the worse."

AJ and I had a brilliant Saturday spending it with my brother, sister in law and the kiddies! and my brother made some jewellery while the kids got all muddy with making a tea pot! ๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿซ–

Of course, my niece still requested she gets a piece of jewellery and I couldn't say no. She picked out a beautiful rose cut Amethyst and my sister in law went for a Purple Copper Turquoise! Her mum did such an great job making her ring. For someone with no experience, she smashed it ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿปmy brother had a lot of fun melting silver down and doing all the hammering haha โš’๏ธ๐Ÿ”จโœจ
