Yesterday a dream came true when we got to visit the Taillerie de Royat. This is a huge Gemcutting workshop and sales office that was founded in 1899 and catered to the affluent visitors of the local thermal spa. The workshop cut its last stone in the early 1990s and completely closed in 2004. Many of the the old machines are still there, as we discovered yesterday.

I have been researching the Taillerie and collecting memorabilia for several years, so it was incredible to be able to freely walk around for two hours and open all the drawers and discover all the secrets that remain inside. There is so much!! Half of a floor was the gemcutting workshop; 4 large grinding wheels in the style of Idar Oberstein (pic5), a long 20 person faceting bench (pic4), tools for jewelry, engraving, and so much more.

I didn’t take many photos because I shot a lot of video for an upcoming YouTube film about the Minerals of Auvergne with a big section about the Taillerie. Stay tuned! Imagine three gemcutters running around like kids in a toy store!

Today, Victoria and I had the pleasure of learning about where French sapphires come from with Alexandra Geologic Garden from Geologic Gardens. French sapphires are quite rare and not many people have the right to mine them so it was cool to see where she mines and what her technique is. It reminded us of previous sapphire mines we’ve been to in Thailand and Montana. Thanks for the great adventure Alexandra!
