An exceptional example of early 17th-century Spanish jewelry, this “Fraternity Pendant,” exhibited by Deborah Elvira Joyas de época at TEFAF Maastricht 2024, has joined the collection of Zamek Królewski na Wawelu.

A medallion crafted in gold and set with table-cut rock crystals, with a central cross surrounded by vibrant red enamel flames—an element characteristic of Spanish goldsmithing. The cross is placed upon a black altar with a rose at its feet, representing the Passion of Christ. Similar pendants were worn as expressions of faith to a specific devotional image or belonging to a religious association.

Rock crystal, highly valued for its purity and luminosity, was widely used in Spanish jewelry of this period, often serving as a refined alternative to diamonds. Imported from Milan, it adorned devotional objects, reliquaries, and personal adornments, reflecting both spiritual devotion and exquisite craftsmanship.
