We don't make that many detailed posts about the clothes we make and use. But in this post we will try to explain something of the process behind the stuff we wear.

This tunic and cloak comes from one of the rare archeological evidence that is acctually complete enough to make a good reconstruction. In Guddal in western norway the findings are from a christian cemetary from around the 12th century.

For some reason there are a number of well preserved clothes from the 11th and 12th century from around scandinavia which really nags us viking age reenactors since we aim to recreate the period just before that. However, this tunic from Guddal (there are two) is much more like the viking age fashion than the early medieval. The fairly tight fit and short lenght are two aspects of this. If this means that these fabric finds are dated wrong or just that this norwegean valley wasn't really up to date with european fashion we shall not speculate in.

The pattern of this tunic is somewhat unusual, especially the gores at the sides. The stripes of the fabric is also something that isn't seen in many clothing finds from this period. The fabric is handwoven and the different colors in the stripes comes from the sheeps normal variation in their wool. It shows something of what one could do without expensive and difficult plant dying. The redish brown that the finds have today comes the soil in the ground where it had been laying for 800 years.

Photos of the find comes from the norwegean university museums photo database. http://www.unimus.no/foto/ #/search?q=guddal&museum=UM

We went to I Förfäders Spår/Ancestors footsteps event and had a great time as always. We did some nets, glass beads and a litle bit of cooking, of course.

A while back we made an attempt to brew a beer with myrica gale. Something like it would have been made during the iron age in Scandinavia. Even though we haven't tried the Uppåkra beer yet we're fairly sure it's better than our experiment. Can't wait to have a taste!

There havn't been too many post from us this winter and spring but we havn't been entirely on the lazy side. Here are some pictures of small projects and events we've been doing. We hope it will be an incredible, outdated summer for you all!

This video explains the events shown on the famous Bayeux tapestry. It's thought to have been made at the end of the 11th century so it is strictly speaking not viking age. But its rich images of both ordinary and epic events and close proximity to the late viking age world makes it an unique source. Fascinating nonetheless.

A complete guide to the story as depicted on the famous Bayeux Tapestry. There is a lot more to it than just the Battle of Hastings. Support me on Patreon: h...

You might've seen our "viking grave" pictures and if you were intrigued by them, you should watch this series of lectures by prof. Neil Price. He spends three lectures on explaining the mindset and culture of the vikingage people, and presents a theory about the ridiculously complex burial customs of the time.

Professor Neil Price delivers the first of three lectures, September 25, 2012, focusing on the fundamental role that narrative, storytelling and dramatisatio...
