“Let them eat cake”, 2025
This is what Marie Antoinette (1755 – 1793) supposedly said when she was confronted with the starving peasants’ lack of bread during the Flour War in 1775. (The statement is attributed to her, but in reality it appears much earlier in French literature). Marie Antoinette lived her life in extreme luxury at the French court. She spent fortunes on dresses, luxury goods and parties, and her extravagance aroused resentment among the population suffering from the poor French economy.
Today, the expression is synonymous with when the privileged in society are unable to put themselves in the shoes of the less privileged. Privilege blindness.
Inspired by the pink spherical cake by and Marie Antoinette – especially Sofia Coppola’s film of the same name – I have created a ring. Built like a crinoline to create the illusion of a ball, just as the crinoline skirts created the illusion of volume in the dresses in Marie Antoinette’s wardrobe. I have cut the flowers in the same shape as the ones the Maison’s pastry chef has decorated the pink cake with. The flowers are set with pink sapphires.
This ring is currently on display at as a part of the exhibition ‘D’Angleterre i ædle glimt’ untill october 31. Find you free tickets via link in comments. Go see! ❤️❤️❤️
