New upcoming class! "Aqua Tofana: Women's Poisoning Rings in History". If you love history, true crime, poisons, and supporting women’s wrongs –-this one is for you. This class will investigate different infamous women’s poisoning rings through history from ancient Rome to modern day and discover whether they were feminist antiheroes, nefarious murderesses, or victims of misogyny and scapegoating. A poisoning ring is a group of people who conspire to kill with poison and women-led poisoning rings tend to have the shared purpose of killing abusive or unwanted husbands.
We will cover several female-led poisoning rings that have captured the popular imagination including those of Giulia Tofana (the originator of the famous aqua tofana poison), Gironima Spana, Giovanna Bonnano, Catherine Monvoisin, Marie-Anne de La Ville, Marie-Josephte Corriveau, the angel makers of Nagyrév, and more. We’ll discuss how they became modern feminist antiheroes, what poisons they may have used, what motivations they may have had, and whether the different poison rings were innocent or guilty.
