Soundportraits

Soundportraits Alannah and Judy, two former CBC broadcasters, bring their skills at interviewers to each Soundportrait, or audio memoir, that they produce.

A Soundportrait is an audio recording of stories – a personal memoir, carefully edited and reproduced on a beautiful CD or series of CDs, or preserved on a silver USB key. A Soundportrait allows the story teller to reveal his or her best tales, in an engaging way. Soundportraits are often commissioned by a family member, a friend, or a colleague. We also have many clients who commission their own Soundportrait, to share their best stories with those they love.

On November 25, 2016, Judy was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by David Johnson, Canada's Governor General, for organizing charity readings of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol across Canada. Thanks to her creativity and vision over the past 25 years, these events have brought happiness to audiences throughout the country and have raised funds for community organizations like food banks, shelters, libraries and hospitals.

Soundportraits can help!

Adrian Mourby wishes he had asked his parents and grandparents about their early lives and who was who in the family albums. Ask yours now, he says, while they are still around to tell you

In this Soundportrait profile of a man who grew up in Toronto, he talks of raising four boys, great years at a cottage, and has some advice for growing older, with vigour: “I loved work, and I advise people coming into their mid-sixties, if you don’t have to quit, keep working. As long as you can, keep your head going. Otherwise, you just fade and become very boring!”

In her Soundportrait, a client born in 1919 had some good advice for anyone fussing about the future: "The other day, someone was worrying about something, and I said, ‘Just take it a day at a time.’ Instead of worrying about something five years ahead, or way ahead, it might come, or it might not, but don’t worry about it now."

If you could have a dinner party, and invite anyone (alive or dead, family or famous) who would you invite?

You know how a scent or aroma will often remind us of an experience in our past? I just heard a story from someone who remembers the joys of riding a farmer's wagon when she was a little girl. The wagon carried "wet garbage" from a boarding school to the farm for the animals to enjoy. To this day, the smell of wet garbage brings a smile to this woman's face!

The Soundportraits team has launched a refreshed website complete with new stories and samples of our work. Alannah and Judy are delighted to offer new ways of recording life stories. On our web page, you can hear stories told by people of all ages. Please take a look, and listen to some of our clients, and think about a Soundsketch, a Soundportrait, or Soundtribute as a gift for someone you admire and love. Make it a family project!

We have just delivered our first SoundTribute (a four disc biography) of a man who has worked hard and long to institute protection of the land and waters of the Georgian Bay area for generations to come ... and even rented a train to make sure people could get to a vote! Life and legacy.
