As the spooky week of is upon us we recommend getting out of your own comfort zone and trying new wines… like one of our favourites….
Austrian Blaufränkisch
This late ripening grape is a cross between European grapes Blauer Zimmettraube and Weißer Heunisch.
The palate of this wine:
Rich blackberry and black cherry contrasted by peppery flavour and bold acidity. This super food-friendly red is a jewel in the Austrian wine crown and offers flavours of all spice and dark chocolate.
This grape is planted all over Austria however, most notably, Mittelburgenland (aka: Blaufränkischland)
Try this wine with the amazing food of Austria - smoked sausages, Knödel (A flavorful dumpling) or Potato Gulasch.
About Austria:
Austria is a cool continental climate, but as far as climatic conditions are concerned, the biggest differences are from Northeast to Southeast.
In the Northeast - the conditions are rather dry and warm, whereas, Southeast the warm climate sees higher humidity. The temperature between the warm days and cool nights in this region speaks to the aromatic intensity of the wines from these regions.
In Austria, there are 40 different grape varieties - 26 white and 14 red in total.
Some grape names you may see in this location:
- Grüner Veltliner (Most widely planted in Austria)
- Riesling
- Weissburgunder
- Chardonnay
- Muskateller
- Traminer (one of the oldest European grape varieties)
- Zweigelt (red)
- Sankt Laurent (red)
- Blauer Wildbacher (we are DYING to try this red)
