What you think of as black actually holds a thousand hidden colors.

True black doesn‘t exist in nature — plant pigments simply aren’t built to produce it. What our eyes perceive as ”black“ is really an extremely deep shade of red or purple. In creating this piece, I followed that same logic in my dyeing process, because black is really the result of many colors layered on top of one another. My oil painting professor once told me: put the black tube away — you can mix a far more beautiful black from other colors. That lesson left a lasting mark on how I understand and approach color to this day.

Black flowers are rare even in flower shops — the supply is scarce and the demand niche. But that‘s exactly where its charm lies: black hides its edge in quiet restraint, yet somehow that only makes its character and rarity stand out even more.

Once, my mind only had room for technique. Now there’s a little more space—for feeling too.

Cutting leather piece by piece, layering it again and again—this quiet, repetitive act mirrors everyday life. In its ordinariness, emotion slowly builds into something solid.

Zoom in, and the cracks on a turtle-back yam‘s caudex look like mountains carved by flowing water—marks left behind after ten thousand years.

Its leaves sprout fast from a caudex that grows so slowly, a strange, striking contrast of speed and stillness.

And even the driest ground can still grow something lush.

The first time I saw a pitcher plant was in elementary school, on a friend’s balcony. Round little pouches hung down like tiny bottles. I thought it looked so cool and strange, and I really wanted to see how it caught insects. But all I found inside were dead bugs.

Pitcher plants grow in poor soil. To get nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, they evolved to catch insects instead.

When I heard this story again as an adult, it made me think life is a lot like the pitcher plant’s evolution. We don’t choose where in the world we’re born, or what kind of environment we grow up in. We often think a place full of resources is best — but maybe that’s exactly what makes people ordinary.

There’s also something good about growing up with less. Limited resources push you to find better solutions, and through that process, you shape yourself into something different — just like the pitcher plant became something unique.

And the little mushrooms on its leaves are standing at the edge too. Maybe they’re ready to take the leap.

Do you believe words can carry magic?
Before the tribute incident went public, I was carrying a lot of pressure inside. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a habit of taking other people‘s words deeply to heart — especially when I felt anxious and unable to make decisions, I’d feel like a headless fly, as if every single word could push me over the edge. That‘s what it’s like to be vulnerable — like a snail without a shell, especially easy to hurt.
But along this journey, I also received so much warmth. Sometimes those words felt like magic — lighting up a path in the darkness when I was at my most fragile. Following that light, I slowly found my way back to my broken pieces, gathering them one by one, putting myself back together again.
That‘s how this piece was born — emotions bared like claws, leaves worn thin with countless wounds, feelings swirling and churning like a sphere in constant motion. I believe there will always be someone willing to light up your life with a little magic of their own. Sometimes, even the smallest bit of warmth can be incredibly powerful.

Spring into summer, poppies are everywhere on the streets — each variety with its own striking presence. That’s the beauty of creating: no limits, just bringing to life what feels beautiful in my head.

In Vancouver, summer is the season to make the most of — it’s when the weather shines. After a year here, I get it too: fall through spring is rainy with early sunsets, perfect for staying in and getting things done. So this summer, I’m telling myself to get out and explore while the sun’s out — the rainy days can handle the rest of the work 😚

Black & White
A while ago, I received a custom order — the client loved flowers in black and white contrast. That inspired me to make a black and white anthurium set for myself. While shaping the surface texture this time, I thought back to a luxurious anthurium I made before, but this time I explored the concave version instead.
Black and white may look pure at first glance, but if you look closely, black isn’t truly black, and white isn’t truly white either. I think many of us spend our lives chasing perfection, but most of the time, we’re really just wandering in the grey areas — and maybe grey is better. Simple, ordinary days are the most peaceful.

Container Gardens

Friends who share plant stories in Vancouver often tell me how different temperate flowers are. From spring to summer, you see blooms bursting everywhere—whether in high-hanging baskets or large wooden barrels along the streets, all showcasing vibrant, colorful blossoms.
As it turns out, these displays are designed to bring the layered beauty of a garden into limited urban spaces. It‘s like shrinking a whole garden into a single container: taller plants create the focal point, while spilling vines and flowers break free from the frame, bringing the entire arrangement to life.

Himalayan Blue Poppy |

In my memories, the white ginger lily is perhaps the flower that connects me most deeply to Taiwan. Especially its fragrance—sometimes just looking at pictures or thinking about it quietly awakens my olfactory memory, carrying my thoughts back to my distant home. Whenever I passed by it on the roadside in the past, I could never resist stepping closer just to take a deep breath of that familiar scent.
In the blink of an eye, it has been nearly a year since I moved to Canada. Perhaps because we live in a Chinese community, our weekday table is still filled with the familiar tastes of Taiwan, and on weekends, we always comfort ourselves with Asian food. These eating habits, so deeply intertwined with our upbringing, are not easily erased—just as we grow older, our palates still stubbornly yearn for the flavors of the meals Grandma used to cook.
Every change in nature happens for a reason. Plants adjust their form of growth according to the local climate and soil, and people are no different. Amidst the foreign landscape and the passage of time, we hold fast to our old roots while showing resilience in a new environment—gradually adapting, gradually transforming, and eventually becoming a richer, different individual.
