There's a lot of work that goes into recycling previous jewellery. Each stone has to be carefully removed. The metal has to be assessed for any hidden repairs like the platinum tips I found on one of the rings. All components need to be tsken apart and as much solder as possible needs to be removed. Then you can weigh out and sort your reclaimed metal to give you your desired casting alloy. Sandcasting allows me full control over the sentimental gold that goes into your piece, adding minimal new material. It's only after casting that the usual steps of cleaning, assembling, polishing and setting take place. This is why recycling still has a cost to it. All that said, its a very fun process!
