We see sixty/seventy year-old amps all the time but 90 year-old amps that are still working are hard to come by. This is a Kay 859 made in Chicago in the late 1930s. It uses very unusual tubes for today standards, but sounds great! Tubes: 6c8g, 6c5, 6n6 and 80 (rectifier).

2025 was an incredibly busy year here at Black Mountain Amplifiers Inc. — full of repairs, restorations, and keeping a whole lot of amps alive and singing. I’m grateful for every project that came through the door.

As we head into 2026, things are shifting a little. To make more room for and the amp‑building side of the business, I’ll be slowing down the repair workload just a bit. That means being more selective with the types of amps I take on — focusing mainly on handwired vintage and boutique tube amplifiers for guitar and bass.
Quality over quantity, and more time to build the amps I love.

Thank you all for the support this past year.

This was an easy fix... but it does make me question the reliability of some fender amps. Most of them are wired properly but I have come across quite a few with unsoldered or poorly soldered contacts, usually at the input jack or tube socket pins. Check the video in the end.

Here is how deal with common power amp issues in the Peavey 5150.
Peavey had a wonderful idea of rivetting all their sockets and boards. Because of that, most techs find themselves having to unsolder all 4 power tube sockets to be able service the board. I prefer a solution that doesn't hurt the printed circuit board and allow for easy circuit board removal if needed in the future.
Here's the solution: drill down the rivets and install regular screwsand nuts as in the pictures.

It is nearly impossible to find a handwired Vox Top boost unit to install in non-top boost amps. So.... here's our solution... we designed and hand-wired a cool unit in a hammond enclosure, with custommade control plate, then installed it in our client's AC30 in such way that it doesn't damage the original back cover and it can be easily removed in the future.
