Soda & Lime

Soda & Lime Soda & Lime Glassworks by Jamie-Lynn Gardner Every petal, dot, stripe, or anything else you see in my designs is melted on and shaped with meticulous care.

****How I started****

In 2005 I was fortunate enough to have studied the craft of glass bead making in Massachusetts and in 2006 in Hong Kong. Aside from these basic bead making courses, I consider myself "formally self taught" in techniques such as implosions and sculpting soft glass off-mandrel.

****Statement****

I love designing and creating one of a kind pendants, earrings and sometimes mi

niature sculptures. I love the nature of glass and the challenge of mastering it in its molten state, it has a beautiful fluidity that can be influenced to create something as special and unique as the nature of the medium itself. I am inspired by flowers, sea creatures, outer space, and organic shapes and patterns.

****The Name****

I named the business after the material I work with and which glass-makers have been using for over 3000 years, Soda-Lime Glass. Soda and Lime are two of the main constituents used to create this traditional type of glass.

****The Process****

Using the finest Italian glass rods my pieces are hand crafted one at a time and entirely freehand in a torch flame making each one totally unique. My focus is on creating pieces using the technique of implosion, which begins by heating and shaping the end of a clear glass rod into a disc. My design is drawn onto the back of the clear glass disc with tiny hand pulled rods of coloured glass, called stringers, then heated and blended. Rotating the glass in the flame, I use heat and gravity to draw and push the design up into the clear glass creating a beautiful three dimensional piece. Thank you

Jamie-Lynn
