Honoring our ancient connection to wolves....

Lupercalia was an ancient Roman festival observed each year on February 15, devoted to fertility, purification, and protection as the land stirred toward spring. It was connected to the sacred Lupercal cave, the legendary place where the she-wolf nursed Romulus and Remus, the mythic founders of Rome—symbolizing instinct, survival, and the birth of a great civilization.

During the ritual, priests known as the Luperci performed sacred animal sacrifices and fashioned strips from goat hide. They then moved through the streets in ceremonial procession, gently touching those they encountered. This act was believed to bless the people with fertility, vitality, protection, and safe childbirth, serving as both a cleansing and life-affirming rite.

Though modern culture sometimes links Lupercalia to the origins of Valentine’s Day, its true essence was not centered on romantic love, but on renewal, purification, and the awakening of life force after winter’s stillness. It marked a powerful seasonal threshold—a sacred honoring of primal instinct, the protection of the community, and the promise of new beginnings as spring approached.
