Hi everyone,
It’s been awhile since we’ve spoken. Like many other organisations, we have been taking a hiatus through this period, but we wanted to reconnect with you all and use this platform to share some resources that may be beneficial to you, as well as provide some updates.
NECTAR stands in solidarity with those protesting on our home soil and around the world against systemic racism and police brutality against Bla(c)k Lives.
Everything we do takes place on stolen Indigenous land - Gadigal land, Wangal land, Ngunnawal land, Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung land, among many others. The music, art and culture that we celebrate, benefit and profit from is deeply rooted in Black culture and built off the back of Black labour. We acknowledge that we have not yet done enough, and apologise that it has taken us until this moment to put a system in place to address this. We promise to do the hard work necessary to understand our role in upholding systems of white supremacy, so that we can be active in dismantling them.
Becoming active allies requires a lot of self driven learning and reflection. There are a vast amount of resources at our disposal to help us better understand our role in structural racism, and actions that we can take to contribute to dismantling it. We have added a selection of resources that we have found useful to our Linktree. It is not exhaustive, and will be updated. We welcome any additions or amends.
We have also added the links of some organisations and campaigns that we have redistributed funds to, and if you have the means we urge you to read up on these and do the same.
For those of us based in Sydney who are in a position to safely do so, we encourage you to attend the vigil for George Floyd taking place today at 3pm at Town Hall. Please note the vigil has been deemed illegal by the Supreme Court so there will be a heavy police presence. We have added some documents to our Linktree to help you understand your rights and info on how to keep your personal information safe.
Wear a mask, keep your distance and be smart. If you are not Bla(c)k or First Nations, be respectful, be peaceful, do not antagonise the police, yell only when asked to, put your body between police and Bla(c)k and First Nations people. The police are way less likely to harm you. Use your privilege to ensure Bla(c)k lives are safe.
We have ended our professional relationship with merchandise organisation Everpress due to allegations of a recurring and systematic racism within the workplace, and will be moving our future merchandise production to local organisations. We urge others to do the same. You can read more about this via the link in our Linktree below.
Additionally, we have created an outline of steps we are going to take as an organisation moving forward. This can be viewed on our website
