According to the GIA, it has been an under-appreciated gem but now there is an ever-increasing demand for it and it’s sought after colours - red, pink, blue and orange. In ancient times, southeast Asia’s mines yielded exceptional large spinel crystals, which became the treasured property of kings and emperors, often passing through many hands as spoils of war.

August gets two birthstones—peridot and spinel. Both are brilliant in their own ways.

With its enchanting yellowish green to greenish yellow colour, peridot gives off an otherworldly aura. Which makes sense—some peridot comes from other worlds, hitching a ride to Earth inside pallasite meteorites. But that’s rare. Much of the peridot on the market forms in our planet’s mantle and moves to the surface by lava, emerging in China and the United States. However, larger peridot gems with fine green colour form from hydrothermal alteration of magnesium and iron rich rocks called peridotites in places like Burma, Pakistan and Egypt.

As for August’s lesser-known second birthstone, spinel, this ‘great imposter’ was often mistaken for July’s birthstone, ruby. Until Jean-Baptiste Louis Romé de L’Isle made the distinction in 1783, the two were basically twins. Many of the most famous rubies are actually spinels, like the Black Prince’s Ruby in the British Crown Jewels. But spinels aren’t one note—their colour ranges from deep red, to bright cobalt, to inky blue and light lilac.
