Thrilled to have visited Black Fig Gallery for the opening of Marked Earth tonight, a ceramic-focused exhibition beautifully curated by Kalie Burgis.

The rooms were dressed in sculptural works beyond inspiring, challenging function, medium and form.

Such a great way to land back from overseas and be reminded of the incredible plasticity of clay, to witness all that it can become.

Some of the exhibited works by Suvira McDonald, Antoinette O'Brien, Oliver Gwilym.

The wall of mugs was equally as touching, and I spotted a few pieces by fellow makers in the area. Make sure to pay a visit if you are around.

Dressed this one up with splashes of vivid colour. Is this why I love vessels so much?

They can come alive with what they hold, their bodies are canvases for potential yet to be determined. The work of making them doesn’t finish with the clay and fire, it stays latent and available for renewal and rethinking. It involves you, or anyone making space for them, to take action and interact with the act of creation.

A collaboration with the environment, bringing people and visions together across space and time.

I have been exploring holes, cracks and raw edges in the form vases can take only to find there is an expansion in their potential. Not a detraction, but an enrichment of their essence.

When picking your morning cup takes you to a new encounter…

I am blown away by the fact that the only ceramic cup I’d made in these colours was the one I happened to bring to Bertie’s Food & Drink, my local cafe.

When I got in, I found the same tones and palette echoing in the painting behind me. It was immediate resonance. How well they conversed and existed in each other’s presence. How beautifully they met in the world of photography. And what a wonderful coffee experience.

Looking forward to deepening this artistic discovery. In the meantime, the painting is by Jacqueline Scotcher Artist.
